Raised with Christ

9:39 PM

Today we celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ.  While it is certainly rightful that the focus of this holiday should be on Christ's resurrection, we often tend to forget that we have been raised, too.

"And you were dead in the trespasses and sins in which you once walked..." (Ephesians 2:1-2a)  We were incapable of doing anything right.  Everything that we touched became tainted by our sin.  Even when we thought we were doing right, it was with the wrong motives.  "We have all become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous deeds are like a polluted garment." (Isaiah 64:6a) We were completely dead.

"But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ..." (Ephesians 2:4-5a)  God loved unlovable us and sent His Son as a man to live a perfect life and to die in our place.  He took on our sin, bearing the wrath that we deserved.

On the third day, He rose from the grave, defeating darkness and sin and death.  He rose from the dead, and because He lives, we can live, too.  But Jesus didn't die just so that we could go to Heaven.  He died so that we could receive light and righteousness and life.  Now that we are raised with Christ, we need to be living new lives.  "Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come." (2 Corinthians 5:17)

We have been raised with Christ in order that we "might walk in newness of life" (Romans 6:4).  Being raised with Christ means putting off the old self, getting rid of sin.  It means putting on the new self -- Christ -- and living in righteousness.  If you have really been raised with Christ, then your life needs to have changed.  Your good deeds are not what save you, but if you are saved, then you will be producing good fruit (see James 2).

"If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God." (Colossians 3:1)  May the reminder of Christ's resurrection be a reminder to live as someone who has been raised.  Your former life is over.  You are now a child of God, adopted and redeemed.  He has resurrected you to live in holiness.

As I was reading your post, I was thinking about how Christ's resurrection makes it possible to live the new life--we overcome in His victory. That's an encouraging reminder that the strength I need comes from HIM, not me.

    1. Thank you! The picture is of my grandmother's tree :).

Yes! We can only live this new life because of His resurrection.
